Building Communities of Practice that Amplify the Flow of Learning Across Organisations

It’s 2025 and our organisations are still working out how to do work; one thing is sure, pretty much all of them are slowed down by silos, and the prevailing themes of hybrid working and bigger workloads only exacerbate this. These silos mean that there are fewer opportunities for people to connect with others who share their practice and passions outside of their immediate team. Which reduces the flow of learning, knowledge, experience and decision making; This is where communities of practice come in, informal networks that join people together across organisational boundaries. Done well, communities of practice can increase in support and motivation, accelerate learning, join-up knowledge, spread good practice and create opportunities to collaborate across organisational boundaries. In this session, Emily Webber will draw on her over 15 years of experience working with communities of practice to explore what communities of practice are (and aren’t), the value they bring to organisations, how they mature, and things to look out for.
